Golf communities may be popular among 55+ homebuyers, but they’re not for everyone. For those who choose to settle down or retire in a community without golf, lower HOA fees and less traffic can be huge benefits.
For residents of California, an idyllic golf course is rarely more than a 5-iron away, but there are some excellent California communities without golf. In this brief article, we’ll take a look at different parts of the state to explore five non-golf communities in California that feature next-level amenities for active adults.
Esperanza- Ontario, CA
This 55+ community in southern California may not have a golf course, but its resort-style amenities are all about connecting with neighbors and enjoying the outdoors. The non-golf California community centers around a 9,000-square-foot clubhouse with fitness center, gathering rooms, full-service bar, catering kitchen, coffee bar, craft area, card/game room, and covered patio. One of the Coachella Valley’s most ideal all-ages and 55+ resort communities, Trilogy at The Polo Club is set in a highly sought-after area, with easy access to La Quinta, Palm Desert, and all the Desert Cities. The centerpiece of the community is The Polo Club, a private, hospitality-staffed Resort Club with dining, fitness, pools, outdoor recreation, and much more (separate membership required). And while there is no golf course within the community, golfer residents are surrounded by iconic courses including those at PGA West, La Quinta, Indian Wells, and Silver Rock.
Summit at Liberty- Rio Vista, CA
Here’s another premier 55+ active adult community, this one in the East Bay area. While there is no golf in this California community, there are an abundance of resort-style amenities and new homes in the scenic Sacramento River Delta. Club Liberty serves as the community’s social and recreational hub with 4.5 acres of amenities including a clubhouse, swimming pool, fitness center, community garden, and bocce ball courts. There is also the Ranch House with a café and large covered patio with a fire pit; an Events Barn with an art studio, business lounge, and events space; and the Racquet Center with lighted tennis and pickleball courts.
Miralon- Palm Springs, CA
Developed by Freehold Communities utilizing an “agrihood” concept that integrates agriculture into a residential neighborhood, Miralon features an abundance of protected green space, four community gardens, citrus trees, and a grove of 7,000 Spanish, Italian and California olive trees that are harvested for oil. It’s a California community without golf…with an ironic twist—the 309-acre masterpiece was built on a former golf course! Homes are incredibly innovative and efficient, the recreational activities seem almost endless, and if you’re still into golf, Palm Springs offers world-class courses right outside the community gates.
