-- Triangle’s Largest Green Community to Host Series of Events --

Chapel Hill, N.C. –In honor of the 40th Annual Earth Day, Briar Chapel by Newland Communities will host a series of events to celebrate local people and organizations embracing the idea that every day is Earth Day.

The 2nd Annual Briar Chapel 5K Run on April 17 at 8 a.m., and the Briar Chapel Earth Day Celebrity Chef Charity Event on April 18 from 1 – 4 p.m. will benefit The Abundance Foundation which increases public awareness of sustainable energy usage and local food consumption. Both events are open to the public. Area chefs featuring locally grown foods include Jimmy Reale of The Carolina Inn, Jeremy Clayman of Busy Bee Café, Arthur Gordon of Irregardless Cafe and Andrew Kuty of Pittsboro General Store Café.

“As the largest green community in the Triangle area, it is our responsibility to demonstrate simple ways to protect the environment,” Keith Hurand, senior vice president and division manager for Newland Communities Carolinas division. “We’re honored to host an Earth Day 5k and have local celebrity chefs participate in our festivities to encourage sustainable living.”

Also on April 18, Briar Chapel will recognize its Sustainability in Education winners, a collaborative project with the Woods Charter School. Depending on the grade level, students were asked to answer a question that ranged from “How can I encourage my family to live more sustainably at home?” to “How can I communicate the benefits of energy cost savings to my parents, peers and community?”
