- Landings residents gathered to watch the final match of the Challenger Wild Card tournament on Sunday, February 28th as Tony Mule, the thirty year old from Greensboro, NC beat Alexandru Pasareanu, 17, from Blufton, SC. Mule had won the event last year so a lot of members knew him and were cheering for him.
They were clearly the two best players. Mule had lost only 13 games in 3 matches leading to the final and Pasareanu only 7.
The final was a very close match, pitting the power and speed of the younger Pasareanu against the grit and experience of Mule. Pasasreanu took a quick early lead and maintained it for the entire match, winning the first set 6-3 and leading 5-3 in the second. However, when it came time to serve for the match at 5-4 in the second set, his game left him and Mule ran off 6 straight games to take the second set 7-5 and take a service break lead of 2-0 in the third. From that point on it was very evenly contested with both players having multiple chances to break serve. In the end Pasareanu saved a total of 9 match points but Mule held serve and won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
A total of 19 players from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Pennsylvania had traveled to The Landings to compete for the right to play in the 2011 Savannah Challenger, which will take place at The Landings April 30- May 8. Matches had started on Friday February 26, with two rounds on Saturday, and the semifinal and final on Sunday.
The Landings had two members in the draw, Grayson Lowenthal, 15 and Alex Gold, 21. Both lost in the first round. The final was refereed by Landings Club member John Remmert in the umpire chair. Club members served as ball people. There was a crowd of about 75 watching the final.
