Viera Community Institute has donated $1,500 to each participating band, winner receives additional $1,500
Viera, Fla. (November 17, 2015) – The Viera Community Institute announces a new addition to this year’s Light Up Viera Holiday Parade on November 28, a battle of the bands featuring marching bands from Brevard County high schools. Rockledge High School, Viera High School, Satellite High School, Astronaut High School, and Heritage High School marching bands will compete with a one-minute performance in front of the parade grandstand. A panel of three judges, as well as the audience along the route will decide the winner. The Viera Community Institute has donated $1,500 to all five of the music programs participating in the battle. The winner of the contest will receive an additional $1,500.
“In the spirit of giving this holiday season, we want to help the music programs and the students who entertain us with their musical talents,” said Lauri Duda, Vice President of The Viera Community Institute. “The audience can expect to be impressed by powerful holiday music inspired by friendly competition between the schools.”
The audience’s vote will make up 25 percent of the vote. They can participate by texting their vote to a number that will be given out at the parade. The judges will award points for the band’s creative use of lights (25 percent), holiday-themed costuming, showmanship, choreography, and engagement (25 percent). Additionally, points will be earned for music selection, musicality, balance and blend, and style and interpretation (25 percent).
"The Viera High School Marching Hawks look forward to representing our community during the Light Up Viera Parade,” said Dominick Eggen, Music Director at Viera High School. “We are honored to yet again lead the parade and plan to do so with pride."
The winning band will be presented with a check and trophy by Santa on the field of Space Coast Stadium before a fireworks show which begins at 8 p.m. The lighted holiday parade begins at 6 p.m. along Veterans Way in Viera.
“Our team has been working hard to organize this family-friendly event, and we can’t wait to see it all come together on November 28,” said Lexie Doyle, Secretary of The Viera Community Institute and organizer of Light Up Viera. “In addition to the bands, 18 brightly decorated floats, dozens of costumed walkers in lights and many other interactive elements will showcase the magic of the holiday season.“
The parade and the fireworks show are free to attend.
