White Sulphur Springs, WV (January 6, 2014) - Carleton Varney, the legendary interior designer and Curator of The Greenbrier, will kick off the resort's 2014 Discovery Series with a dedicated design weekend, January 24-26.

Varney, the former protégé of Dorothy Draper and current President of Dorothy Draper & Co, carries on the firm's storied 65-year relationship with The Greenbrier and will introduce guests to the resort's unique design scheme through an entertaining series of fireside chats, walking tours and cocktails parties.

Weekend highlights will include:

"Happy Birthday, Carleton Varney!" Dinner Party
Carleton will be joined by his closest family and friends, as well as guests of The Greenbrier, in celebrating his birthday with live music, dinner and dancing. Broadway star Rita McKenzie will be performing in Carleton's honor. (Guests of The Greenbrier can book their tables by making reservations in the Main Dining Room.)

"Cocktails with Carleton" in the State Suite
The State Suite boasts one of the most impressive entrance foyers on property, showcasing The Greenbrier's traditional black and white marble tile, and Carleton Varney will discuss the design techniques and answer questions as guests sip cocktails (the mint julep was invented at The Greenbrier).

Book Signing in the Carleton Varney Gift Gallery
Carleton Varney will be signing his latest book, Decorating in the Grand Manor, A Design Memoir, as well as answering guests' questions.

"The Decoration History of The Greenbrier" in the Upper Lobby
The elegant interior and exterior décor of the current hotel is traced from its 1913 beginnings and during this fireside chat with Carleton Varney, design enthusiasts can learn more about the design philosophy and techniques.

"Green and White" DVD Signing in The Greenbrier Shoppe
Carleton Varney will be signing copies of his new DVD, Green and White, which tells the story of how The Greenbrier's iconic look was invented and reinvented over time.

Additional weekend events will be hosted by industry personalities such as: the team from the hit PBS show, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW; Monte Durham, celebrity wedding consultant and fashion director of Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta; and Mandy Hale, blogger and author of The Single Woman: Life, Love & a Dash of Sass and the forthcoming March 2014 release, I've Never Been to Vegas But My Luggage Has.
