Savannah, GA (June, 2, 2011) - On May 28, with a backdrop of sunny skies and smiling faces, the 16th Annual Landings Kid’s Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Coastal Conservation Association - Skidaway Island Chapter, commenced on the banks of the Kid’s Fishing Lagoon. This derby, which has become an integral tradition for the children of The Landings, is just one more way the community fosters youthful spirit and family fun.

The morning began with registration during which the children received a free hat from the CCA. Then at 9am, 114 participants and their family members lined the lagoon, eagerly awaiting the official announcement to cast their lines. For those who lacked equipment, spare reels, rods and bait were available so each contestant could equally participate.

Exactly one second after the whistle blew, two loud screams were simultaneously heard – indicating the first catches of the day had already been made! After an hour and a half of dutifully watching their lines and enjoying the company of other young Landings residents, the children turned in their scorecards. The judges tallied 103 fish, mostly large Bluegills, a few Bass and 5 turtles, caught by children ages 3 to 15. The largest fish was reeled in by a 6 year old -- a 20” Bass!

Raffle prizes were distributed, awards were given, pictures taken, and the satisfied kids returned home with plenty of “fish” stories.

As with any event, the Kids Fishing Derby would not have been successful without all the volunteers, individual donors and this year’s generous sponsors - KIWANIS, Bandy’s Bait Shop, The Landings Association, Friends of Leonard DaCamara, Zebco, GA Dept. of Natural Resources and CCA.

The Bethesda Barnbuilders also donated their time and expertise to build picnic tables, benches, kiosk, signs and Kids Fishing Derby support tables located around the lagoon. Their professional work makes this a great destination point that will be long enjoyed even when the rods and reels are gone.

The Kids Fishing Lagoon is a great place for a family outing and picnic any time of the year. The large number of bluegills and some largemouth bass provide fun fishing for kids all year long.
