(Daniel Island, S.C.) -The annual Family Circle Cup gets underway on Daniel Island in less than two weeks, and tournament staff, along with residents and businesses on Daniel Island, are getting ready for a big year as this Premier Event of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour celebrates its tenth year in Charleston. The top names in women’s tennis – including Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharpova and many more – are scheduled to complete for a $700,000 purse at Daniel Island’s award-winning Family Circle Tennis Center April 10-18.

One of the hottest tickets in professional tennis, the Family Circle Cup is more than just a tennis tournament- it’s a week-long celebration. This year, the line-up of special activities designed to entertain fans of all ages will be capped off with a special event on Saturday, April 17 in celebration of the Tournament’s ten years on Daniel Island. “Game, Set, Rock. Tennis. Amplified.” will be an evening of music and tennis entertainment featuring John McEnroe, Jim Courier, Anna Kournikova and a fourth player (to be announced) exhibiting their talents as Charleston’s country, bluegrass and roots-rock favorites, The Blue Dogs, perform live at Family Circle Stadium.

“The Family Circle Cup is all about World Class tennis. We are going to give it our best to match that level of excitement because the fans on Daniel Island expect top notch action,” commented John McEnroe. “It is going to be a great Saturday night in Charleston.”

Since 1973, when it first began in Hilton Head, S.C., the Family Circle Cup has been synonymous with women’s tennis. That year, it made history as the first women’s tennis event to offer a $100,000 prize and the first to be broadcast on network television. The tournament went on to help propel the careers of some of the greatest names in the history of women’s tennis, including Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf, Gabriela Sabatini, Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Venus Williams, Justine Henin, and Serena Williams.

In 2001, the tournament moved to its new home on Daniel Island, the 18-court Family Circle Tennis Center, located in a waterfront park setting on the Wando River. In addition to being the tournament’s home, this state-of-the-art facility also provides residents of Daniel Island and greater Charleston access to one of the finest tennis centers in the southeast.
