(Tampa, Fla.) – FishHawk Ranch, the first certified Green Development in Hillsborough County and the largest in Tampa, was recently awarded both the 2009 Aurora and Grand Aurora Awards in the Green Construction category for Residential/Mixed-Use Developments.

This prestigious award exemplifies FishHawk Ranch’s dedication to creating sustainable, healthy communities.

The nationally recognized Aurora Awards honor building professionals in a 12-state southeast region that have demonstrated building and design excellence. FishHawk Ranch stood out in the Green Construction category for its numerous energy-efficient amenities that not only support and enhance natural systems, but also ensure that they flourish in tandem with the built environment.

FishHawk Ranch won the Aurora Award in the Green Construction category for a Residential/Mixed-Use Development of more than 500 acres and claimed victory with a Grand Aurora Award which included Residential/Mixed-Use Developments of all sizes in the Green Construction category.

“Winning the Aurora reinforces that we are continually striving to create enduring communities,” said Rick Harcrow, senior VP of operations for Newland Communities.

FishHawk Ranch has numerous energy-efficient features, like a sophisticated reclaimed-water system, low-maintenance landscaping and an emphasis on the use of native vegetation. Additionally, the community features a 25-mile trail system with interpretative signage, parks within a quarter mile of every home and community recreation centers that give residents access to swimming pools so they don’t need to build their own energy-intensive backyard pools.

“For FishHawk Ranch, the Aurora Awards serve as recognition for their past efforts in creating a sustainable, green community,” said Drew Smith president of Two Trails, Inc. “As they say in FishHawk Ranch, they truly were green before green was cool.”

To further extend the community’s green initiatives, FishHawk Ranch has encouraged builders to use energy-conserving designs and materials, and to create high-performance homes that will save residents money in utility costs, improve their quality of life and emphasize conservation of resources.
