TRAVELERS REST, S.C., August 10, 2023 – J-1 interns from The Cliffs’ six Greenville County-based communities volunteered at Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Taylors on August 8, 2023, as part of the nationwide ‘Exchange Day’ celebrations created to bring J-1 exchange visitors together for organized service projects to celebrate and share cultural diversity, give back to their local communities, and have some fun. This is the first year The Cliffs has participated in the J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program, and they currently have 19 J-1 interns – from India, South Africa, Nepal, and the Philippines – working at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs, The Cliffs at Keowee Falls, The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards, The Cliffs at Mountain Park, The Cliffs at Glassy and The Cliffs Valley.

The Cliffs’ interns joined the Habitat for Humanity ReStore team for an Exchange Day event at 3033 Wade Hampton Boulevard in Taylors helping in the store moving furniture, cleaning appliances and furniture, moving building supplies and stocking shelves. Habitat ReStores are independently owned reuse stores operated by local Habitat for Humanity organizations. ReStores accept donations and sell a constantly changing inventory of diverse, high-quality merchandise to the public at a fraction of the retail price, while diverting reusable household items and building materials from area landfills. Sales of donated items help Habitat for Humanity partner with local families to build, rehabilitate and repair safe and affordable homes in their own community and around the world.

“They’re amazing. Their work ethic is just incredible,” Steve Savage, Recruitment Manager at The Cliffs, says of the community’s J-1 interns. “They’re representing their countries with their native cuisine and getting a chance to get their name out there. For them, it’s great, and it’s great for us.”

The Cliffs anticipates this program growing and they expect a total of 39 J-1 interns from six different countries by the end of September 2023. The J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program is a one-year endeavor and a great accomplishment for the interns who come to learn more about the culinary and Food and Beverage industries which they are studying in their home country as well as the culture in the United States. The Cliffs began the lengthy process last October, starting with interviews and resulting with arrival in the US. What began with a total request of 21 interns from all The Cliffs’ clubs, has grown in less than a year to what will be 39 by the end of September. The incredible popularity of the program has resulted in The Cliffs’ starting a housing and transportation department to house and transport the interns from the airport at arrival to their apartment and to and from work.
