Daufuskie Island, S.C. (Dec. 13, 2013) – Residents of the Haig Point Club community will join with local representatives from the Audubon Society Saturday, Dec. 14th, for their annual Christmas Bird Count on Daufuskie Island.

“The data we collect is reported as part of the Hilton Head Island Audubon chapter and it helps scientists and conservation biologists determine the long-term health and status of bird populations across America,” said Kathi De Leo, a Haig Point resident for the past seven years. Other residents involved are Toni Ferguson and Mike Loftus.

“It’s exciting to see all the birds and learn more about each species,” said De Leo, who will join with Nan Lloyd and others from the Audubon Society for the all-day event where participants use golf carts to travel the island.

A year ago, the group observed 63 different bird species and a total of 1,190 birds, including a surprise find of a wintering painted bunting. The group is also proud of having three bald eagle nests on the Island where eagles give birth and stay through the winter months. Nationally, thousands of birders will help identify species in more than 2,000 locations within a month-long span.

The national program helps identify environmental issues that have implications for people as well as birds, such as groundwater contamination or changes due to global warming.

“I love being out and about, and my husband and I love playing golf,” said De Leo. “But there is so much more to do at Haig Point, including what we are doing this weekend.”
