Savannah, GA. (May 26, 2011) - On May 15, 2011 more than 200 attendees enjoyed a delicious buffet catered by Cha Bella and live music from Savannah Steve at Skidaway Farms’ first “Supper At The Farm”. A sumptuous success, this event was a testament to the dedication of Landings residents and just one more way in which The Landings continues to be an environmentally friendly and people-oriented community.

Skidaway Farms, a Community Garden, was a dream of Landings residents since 2005. It finally became a reality in February 2011 when a grand opening, attended by hundreds of Skidaway Island residents, took place. The Farm, as it’s affectionately known, encompasses 2.2 plantable acres on the north end of Skidaway Island. The garden, which is open to all Skidaway Island residents, includes double fencing, shallow wells, irrigation, compost bins, a children’s garden, and storage sheds for tools. Nearly two hundred beds, neatly divided by alleyways, have been rented by island residents who want to take advantage of year-round gardening.

The Supper At The Farm, which is planned to become an annual event, was held to help raise much-needed funds to pay down the construction loan on the Farm and exceeded its fundraising goal of $5,000. Committee Chair and Event Organizer Blake Caldwell couldn't have been more pleased with the evening. "It's the Farmers who've made this so great," she responded when thanked for the event. "This was a team effort!"

The Farms’ inaugural harvest has been in progress for three weeks, and as you stroll through the farm you will see ripening tomatoes, huge heads of cabbage, beans climbing up their poles, and zucchini ready for picking, and so much more. The outlook for next season is every bit as bright as the colors from this year’s harvest which adorn the landscape. Vice-chair and Membership Coordinator Janet Waldie reported that The Farm is already over 95% occupied for the coming season.

"Every day, I receive another request for a plot,” said Waldie, “and with the demand for the planned construction of new raised beds, we'll be close to 100% by the end of June!”
