(Savannah, GA) - Launching a community garden on Skidaway Island is only months away, as a lease is in hand for the land, formerly a sod farm for The Landings Club, with 2.2 plantable acres located on the north end of Skidaway Island. Near-term plans include double fencing and hog wire to exclude wildlife, shallow wells, irrigation, compost bins, and storage sheds for tools.

By November 1, nearly two hundred beds, neatly divided by alleyways, will be ready to be rented to island residents who long to take advantage of year-round gardening here to produce nutritious food in a sundrenched and deer-free location. A children’s garden and another for demonstration are on the drawing board. And somewhere down the line, bees and fruit trees, arbors, and berry bushes will be added. The soil is about to be tilled, amended, and planted with a cover crop which will be tilled in preparation for opening day.

One-third of the $50,000 estimated startup costs have come from donations from The Landings Landlovers’ Green Thumb Garden Club, Landings Landlovers, and Skidaway Audubon. As part of ongoing fundraising, a benefit dinner will be held Sunday, August 29 at Cha-Bella restaurant. All proceeds will benefit Skidaway Farms, with Chef Matthew Roher and partner Steve Howard co-hosting in honor of their partnership with Skidaway Farms.
