(St. Helena Island, SC) – In a recent survey conducted by the McMahon Group, a reputable private club planner and consultant, 87 percent of residents and club members on Dataw Island (S.C.) reported being satisfied with their community with only five percent dissatisfied. More than 1,500 property owners and club members responded to the survey which was conducted last fall.

In rating the overall satisfaction with all activities, Dataw Island Club members exceeded a comparative database of 27 other communities located in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida and Arizona, according to the McMahon Group. The 87 percent satisfaction at Dataw Island is above the average of 79 percent at the other clubs surveyed which are located inside similar gated residential communities. Meanwhile, 36 percent of respondents claimed they were very satisfied which is more than 10 percent higher when compared to the other clubs.

“This survey says a lot about our residents, our planning and our future,” said Ted Bartlett, general manager and chief operating officer of Dataw Island Club. “Dataw Island is well-positioned for growth as we emerge from a challenging economic time. The survey is proof of where we have been succeeding and where we need to improve as we move into 2011.”

With only a few exceptions, respondents are very satisfied with the Tom Fazio-designed Cotton Dike and the Arthur Hills-designed Morgan River championship golf courses on Dataw Island. Ninety-seven percent of respondents were satisfied with the overall condition of the golf courses. Other key course aspects with very high satisfaction ratings include the condition of the tees, fairways, greens and landscaping. Respondents commented on the need for improvement of the irrigation systems, condition of the bunkers and cart paths. However, club management is in the process of implementing a plan to address those areas.

Members were also very satisfied with all aspects of the Community Center, plus, the tennis and swimming facilities. Results in all of those areas rated higher when compared to other clubs in the McMahon database.

Respondents cited areas of future improvement at Dataw Island including expansion of dining and physical therapy facilities. Eighty-four percent were in favor of developing a non-resident membership program.
