(St. Helena Island, SC) – Dataw Island will celebrate its 25th anniversary as a community on November 13 with a series of day-long events scheduled for residents and club members.

Events include golf and tennis exhibitions and clinics, a slide show by the Dataw Island Historical Foundation, boat ride tours offered by the Dataw Island Yacht Club, a garden club exhibit and a community cookout. The day will conclude with an awards ceremony and remarks from Dataw Island representatives and residents.

“This will be a special day for all the residents and members of Dataw Island,” said Ted Bartlett, general manager and chief operating officer of Dataw Island Club. “Dataw is a very special place and the community truly embodies its moniker of ‘island of friends.’ We have a number of people who have lived here all 25 years and that’s a testament to everyone who makes Dataw Island one of the most desirable places to live, not only in the Lowcountry, but in the entire Southeast.”

When Dataw Island opened in 1985, the clubhouse, tennis courts and the Tom Fazio-designed Cotton Dike course was unveiled and the real estate offerings comprised 24 residences and six model homes. Dataw Island is now a successful 870-acre gated community of 1,100 properties and more than 850 members, offering its residents the best in coastal, island living. Both Dataw Island and Beaufort, S.C. consistently rank high in nationally published lists of preferred places to live, or retire.

Noted golf course architect Tom Fazio was invited to attend the 25th anniversary celebration, but could not due to a prior commitment. However, Fazio did write a letter for the Dataw Island residents, a portion of which reads: “Dataw Island holds many fond memories for me. I was and always will be very pleased with the accomplishment of the outstanding environment that was created at Dataw and I’m proud to list the Cotton Dike course as one of our finest accomplishments in golf course design.”

In 1989, the Arthur Hills-designed Morgan River golf course was opened, and along with the Cotton Dike course, both achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program.

Over 25 years, Dataw Island has received numerous other accolades including: “America’s Top 100 Golf Community” by Travel + Leisure Golf; “Top 10 Retirement Community” by Best Retirement Destinations; “Top 100 Amenity Community” in the Southeast by Ideal Living magazine; and “Best in Value” Golf Communities in America by LINKS magazine.
