St. Helena Island, SC - Representatives from Dataw Island Club announced today that the Purple Heart Wounded Warrior Benefit Golf Tournament raised more than $22,000 for the national organization that assists the men and women of the armed forces, and their families, who were severely injured in combat.

Held on Sunday, November 15, on Dataw’s Morgan River and the Cotton Dike courses, the Purple Heart Wounded Warrior Benefit Golf Tournament hosted 200 Dataw Island residents in an 18-hole scramble with separate divisions for men and women. In addition, 300 residents also contributed to the cause by purchasing hole sponsorships and donating prizes.

The 2009 tournament doubled the proceeds from the first year through the leadership of Dataw Island resident Glenn Blackburn, a former colonel in the Army and a Purple Heart recipient who was wounded in Vietnam, and his wife Susan.

“Dataw Island embraced this entire benefit to honor the brave men and women and the courage they have during this trying times,” said Blackburn, tournament co-chairperson. “Many of these women and men who are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan have suffered traumatic injuries. Susan and I met some of these individuals who are transitioning back to the civilian life and they have touched our lives. The Wounded Warrior Project is a great program that lets them know that we have not forgotten them.”

“Our residents have always been willing to give their time and efforts to help raise money for charitable organizations, “said Ted Bartlett, general manager of Dataw Island. “We are very proud of the residents who participated in the 2009 Wounded Warrior tournament and assist those who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.”
