St. Helena Island, SC (October 26, 2018) - South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued a proclamation naming November 6th, 2018, “TEE IT UP FOR THE TROOPS DAY.”

In recognition of our American veterans, Gov. McMaster encourages all South Carolinians to support our military and honor their great sacrifices.

We, too, hope that all South Carolinians and all Americans will support our veterans and those currently serving. In Dataw tradition, we will again launch a week-long celebration of our veterans with activities ranging from a flag brigade to a golf tournament, a rally and raising of the colors to guest bartenders and a very special breakfast and a lunch. The week’s events are veteran-centered and include the Veterans Golf Classic in which sponsors get to play golf alongside warriors, in memory and honor of family members and our military.

This year, Dataw Island Golf Pro Chris Fearn will again play his one-day Golf Marathon and try to best his record of how many holes of golf he can play in one day – a tough undertaking considering that last year he played more than 200 holes! Starting pre-dawn with glow-in-the-dark balls and finishing at dusk, Fearn was instrumental in the Dataw Island tally of raising more than $50,000 for veterans organizations last year. Pledges can be made with the Dataw Golf Shop and include bonuses for pars, birdies, and eagles.

Tee It Up for the Troops is unique in that it grants monies to many different organizations around the country who serve veterans, after they have been vetted and deemed within the organizations varied missions. Their mission is to provide critically needed services to help our veterans to heal, transition, grow and thrive.

Tee It Up for the Troops targets its support across these critical areas of need:

• Treatment of PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries: the hidden wounds of war

• Suicide Awareness and Prevention: reducing veteran suicides

• Employment: veteran unemployment rate is much higher than the national average

• Sports and Recreation: both adaptive and rehabilitative

• Family and Caregiver Support: strong family + strong caregiver = strong warrior

• Housing: homelessness, plus transitional and comfort housing while receiving treatment

• REUNION program has reunited nearly 300 combat veterans who were separated due to battlefield injuries, changes in rehabilitation, or other reasons beyond their control

• Assist veterans in launching their own business through our Operation Heartfirst initiative with Anytime Fitness.

Since 2005, Tee It Up for the Troops has hosted more than 415 fundraising events in over 40 states and with the generous support of sponsors and volunteers, these events have allowed them to donate more than $9,000,000 to more than 325 veteran service organizations.

The Dataw Golf Shop will be collecting checks for Tee It Up for the Troops, and this year in a bid of national support for the effort, monies are also being raised around the country and online. With the expanded national effort, a raffle has also been formed and those donating through Dataw as well as nationally will be entered to receive some fantastic prizes.

Taking inspiration from Fearn’s selfless effort, Tee It Up for the Troops hopes to have a run of golf marathons take place around the United States.

Dataw Island also teams up with several local Beaufort, SC, service organizations including Disabled American Veterans Chapter #12, Jim Leach Memorial Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, American Legion Post #9, and Vanderoot All Airborne Chapter, in support of Tee It Up For The Troops.

Please stop by the Golf Shop or call them at (843) 838-8250 to pledge your support and to sign up to volunteer!
