- (June 9, 2011) - ShelterBox USA, an international disaster relief organization with U.S. headquarters based in Lakewood Ranch, is partnering with LWR Communities to celebrate Big Green Box Week, its annual awareness week, June 11–18.
Big Green Box Week is designed to promote the importance of taking humanitarian action following natural and other disasters. In the United States, ShelterBox USA celebrates the idea that individuals, businesses, schools, civic and other groups can help make a global impact by supporting ShelterBox’s mission of providing shelter, warmth and dignity to disaster survivors worldwide.
“We deliver aid all around the world,” said Emily Sperling, ShelterBox USA president, “but many people in our own community are not familiar with ShelterBox. We’re pleased to partner with Lakewood Ranch, which will help raise awareness about our work.”
A ShelterBox kit, which contains a disaster relief tent for a family of up to 10 people, stove, blankets, water filtration system and other tools for survival, will be on display at various locations throughout Lakewood Ranch, including the Lakewood Ranch Information Center and three model homes.
Area residents are invited to each location to learn more about ShelterBox. They include:
