– The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia received a huge “hole in one” last Sunday when The Georgia Club Foundation presented the organization a check for $30,000 from its annual Celebrity Golf Tournament. More than 300 celebrities, golfers, and volunteers came together July 31 for The Georgia Club Foundation’s Third Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament benefitting both the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia and the Foundation. The $30,000 donation from the event doubled last year’s contribution from the tournament.
Food Bank President John Becker accepted the donation at a check presentation on September 5. The proceeds were the result of the Tournament which also included a silent and live auction and the Yoculan Drop where former UGA Gymnastics Coach Suzanne Yoculan dropped more than 400 golf balls from a helicopter for the chance to win a golf trip.
“The Georgia Club Foundation, the members of the Club, and the participants of this tournament are a blessing to struggling families across Northeast Georgia and particularly in Barrow County,” says John Becker, President of the Food Bank. “To have a group of caring, capable and highly committed citizens working on the behalf of folks left behind in the current economy is to have the best of friends. We are honored to be part of this outreach. Over the years, this tournament has provided thousands of neighbors help in the face of despair.
This year, The Georgia Club Foundation has again made that commitment. The proceeds from this tournament feed thousands of families through the Mobile Pantry program, food pantries and other related outreaches. In addition, the Club cares for children, enabling them to come to school on Monday ready to work, because they were able to eat good nutritious meals over the weekend through the Food2Kids program.
This event is uniquely American and is the embodiment of caring for our neighbors. The participants live up to the ideals to which we all aspire. The Celebrity Golf Tournament is a wonderful blessing to Northeast Georgia. The Food Bank is grateful for the opportunity to feed the hungry on behalf of the Foundation, members, and tourney players. Thank you!”
Last year, the Tournament raised enough money to provide 60,000 meals through the Food Bank. This year, the majority of the Foundation’s contribution will go toward the Food Bank’s “Food 2 Kids” program.
The Georgia Club Foundation Chairman Bob Cullerton noted, “The Foundation actively seeks opportunities to support the members of our local community. By donating to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, we are able to directly impact the lives of the people we strive to serve through our work.”
