- It is time again for Tour de Ranch! Tour de Ranch is the recreational bicycle ride that benefits the Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness by providing bicycles to the homeless. This year’s ride is scheduled for April 24, 2010 starting at 7am.
This year’s event will feature a 20 mile, 35 mile, 50 mile, 63 mile and a 100 mile ride. All rides will start on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch. The ride is $30/ person regardless of the route distance, or you can donate a fat tire bike. For those interested in donating, the bike must be in working condition (flat tires okay). Road bikes and bike accessories will also be accepted as donations but not in lieu of the registration fee.
Registration includes a continental breakfast, 5 full service rest stops, brunch, a Tour de Ranch Tee shirt (while supplies last) and road SAG support by Village Bikes.
New this year will be an After Ride Party, with live entertainment and silent auction. “We are hoping for a big community turnout,” said Judi DeWalt, an event organizer. “So if you don’t ride you can still come out to welcome and cheer for the riders upon their return. Good food, good entertainment, good rides for a wonderful cause.”
Martha Childress from the Community Coalition on Homelessness cites a few real life examples of how bicycles from events like this benefit people in the community. She helped deliver donated bicycles just last week and recalls “Randall C. was amazed when I showed him his bike. He was trying to go around to different places looking for work--- any kind of work---- and he was limited to the distance he could go just walking--- that bike gave him wings. He is now able to have several little part time jobs and get to them all in a timely fashion”
“Wayne R. loved the wonderful lights ---front and back--- because if he has to ride after dark with no lights he will have a problem with the police and daylight savings time makes a person have to be out and about before daylight.”
“Walter S. thought that I was saving the really nice bikes for special clients and I told him that indeed I was -----and later when I rolled out one of the nice new bikes Walter turned his head and looked the other way--- because I'm sure he was convinced that he surely couldn't be one of those "special" people----you should have seen the look on his face when he saw that the bike was for him--- It would have made your heart hurt!”
You can register for this year’s event on Active.com, mail-in or on day of the event. For more information go to firstname.lastname@example.org.
