Changes will result in improved playability for Tom Fazio-Designed Lowcountry Course

June 11, 2008, St. Helena Island, S.C.
– Representatives from Dataw Island today announced that they have begun a major renovation on the second green of their Tom Fazio-designed Cotton Dike course. The renovation calls for the repositioning of the green slightly to the left of its current location in order to provide better sunlight, build it to USGA specifications to improve drainage and playability, increase the size and number of usable pin locations and contour the surrounds for playability.

An $80,000 project, the renovation of the Cotton Dike’s No. two green is scheduled to take three weeks for construction and 75 days for new grass to be grown. The current timetable calls for the new green to be reopened in early September. These renovations are being monitored and conducted by Dataw Island director of golf maintenance Brian Hollingsworth.

While the Cotton Dike No. two green is being renovated, the remainder of the Cotton Dike course will be open and played as a 17-hole golf course. Built in 1985, the course received its name from the system of dikes that were built 140 years ago by plantation owners on Dataw Island to increase the land area for growing Sea Island cotton, which was the staple crop of the period. These distinctive features are still visible today around the Cotton Dike course, with nearly half of the 18 holes lying along the pristine marsh waters of Jenkins Creek.

“We’re excited to announce our renovation project for the Cotton Dike No. two green,” said Kevin Rhatigan, general manager and chief operating officer of Dataw Island. “The changes we are implementing will surely result in a better overall golf experience for our members and guests in the future.”
