Hilton Head Island, SC (Oct. 17, 2013) – Randall Page, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Haig Point Club and Community Association, served as moderator for the first local two-day symposium on “Sustainability in Golf,” offered Oct. 3-4 by the non-profit organization Experience Green at Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head.

The discussion, which attracted attendees from 11 states and Scotland and Canada, tackled the topics of “what it means, how we do it and why it matters,” said Teresa Wade, founder and executive director of the presenting organization.

“Anything we can do to educate the industry leaders and the public about the role that golf courses do and should play in being good environmental stewards is important, especially here in the Lowcountry, where our everyday surroundings are so special to us,” said Page.

The Rees Jones Signature golf course at Haig Point on neighboring Daufuskie Island is one of those special courses designed to be in harmony with the land and its surroundings.

“This was one of the first really sustainable golf courses where we worked in harmony with the terrain and the wetlands and we enhanced the wildlife,” said architect Rees Jones. “This course really became a signature piece for forward-thinking golf courses. It was way ahead of the curve. It was one of the first that really was able to showcase that golf courses could enhance the natural environment and wildlife habitats.”

Jason Cherry, Haig Point director of golf and Craig Walsh, Haig Point director of agronomy, also attended the discussions.

About Haig Point

The community is also home to a stunning Rees Jones Signature golf course. Amenities at Haig Point Club also include a full-service tennis center, equestrian center, two restaurants and a community park.
