Lake Hartwell, GA
(Sept. 26, 2013) - The work of seven North Georgia artists is featured the 2013 Southern Living Custom Builder Showcase Home by Dillard-Jones Builders, which will be open Friday through Sunday, September 27 until December 22, at Currahee Club on Lake Hartwell near Toccoa, GA.
“The history and habitat of Currahee Club offered us the opportunity to feature the work of local artists and photographers who have long portrayed the landscape, wildlife, culture and character of the land once occupied by the Cherokee,” said showcase home designer Sandy Hankins of SH Designs. “The paintings, pottery and photography of these North Georgia artists add to the home’s beauty and authenticity.”
Featured in the Southern Living Custom Builder Showcase Home is Danielsville, GA artist Autumn Strickland. Among Strickland’s featured oil paintings are “Turkey and 2 Hens,” which hangs over the mantle in the great room, as well as “German Shorthair,” a hunting dog with a quail in its mouth, also hanging in the great room. At Hankins’ request, Strickland painted a pair of ‘funky roosters’ for the dining area.
Oils by Carnesville, GA artist Betty Wansley also are featured. Wansley learned different styles of art by studying over the years with renowned artists Alan Bale of Cornelia, GA, Dori Hale of Hartwell, GA and the late Tommye Sue Murphy of Lavonia, GA.
Golf paintings by Toccoa, GA’s Wendy Thompson are found in the study on the main level. The 17th hole at Currahee Club was her first golf painting, completed in January 2013, followed by Trestle Ridge, a painting of the 10th hole at Currahee Club.
The work of local clay artists Sharon Mahon and DeLisa Christ is found in the great room and kitchen, in the hobby room and children’s room. Mahon began sculpting in 1998 while working for Turner Broadcasting’s World Championship Wrestling as VP of International Development. After leaving the corporate world, Mahon pursued pottery more seriously and became a founding member of Dirt Bag Pottery in Clarkesville, GA.
For Christ, the unique pieces she creates using organic materials, natural stone and rock are indicative of her earthy personality. On her many trips to North Georgia, she began collecting pottery and watching demonstrating artists. In 2006 she began a pottery workshop and found fulfillment in ‘getting dirty’. Christ owns DeVine Creations in Toccoa.
Several pieces by watercolor artist Loretta Addison are featured throughout the home. Addison remembers entering an art contest in the third grade with a drawing of a “Ford” automobile. Some 35 years later, an oil painting on a tin can again sparked her enthusiasm for art. After enrolling in watercolor classes, Addison found it to be her favorite art form.
Stephens County photographers Angie Ramage and Anne Shurley have captured the Native American spirit of the Toccoa area in their photographs on display in the media room. Ramage works in the Atlanta area during the week, returning home to Stephens County on the weekends where she hits the back roads with her camera. Photography always has been a hobby for Shurley, but it now has become part of everyday life as she captures countless images in her role as Community Manager at Currahee Club. The work of both photographers can be seen online at LivingInStephensCounty.com
