The Landings on Skidaway Island (April 25, 2012) - For the 17th consecutive year, Skidaway Island’s Coastal Conservation Association Chapter (CCA) will host its annual Kids Fishing Derby on May 26 from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. at The Landings Kids Fishing Lagoon.

Over 1,600 children have participated to date. Each year, children and grandchildren of Landings residents, their guests, and other special guests are invited to participate in this exciting and fun-filled event.

In the past, Bethesda Academy, the Salvation Army, Greenbriar Children of Tomorrow, CASA, and children of local military families have been invited to enjoy the fishing fun. In addition to CCA volunteers, a number of local high schoolers volunteer their time as coaches and fishing buddies for those invited guests to help them make the most of the experience.

To make the event even more fun, Lagoon #56 has been stocked with 2,500 Bluegills to provide many catching opportunities for the kids. Some Largemouth Bass are available, too. In the past, fishermen have reeled in turtles, eels, and even a hat on one occasion!

The Derby provides an entertaining outdoor experience and teaches kids how to enjoy and protect our natural resources while spending quality time with adults. Children as young as three and as old as 15 attend with their parents, grandparents or other adults. Registration takes place at Lagoon #56 from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and every child receives a CCA Fishing Cap at that time. Members of the CCA Skidaway Chapter are on hand to give assistance and instructions, and to measure and record each fish as it is caught.

The starting horn will blow at 9:00am the first fish will usually be reeled-in within seconds to the sound of whoops and hollers which can be heard across the lagoon! From that moment on, all eyes will remain glued to the lines in anticipation of the next fish being caught. Before you know it, the horn blows at 10:30a.m. to officially end the derby.

Prizes are awarded at 11:00 a.m. in a large variety of categories, and contestants are grouped by age to give all children a fair chance of winning. The children and adults alike will leave with smiles, a sense of accomplishment and a lot of fish stories! This is just another event that enhances life for all ages at The Landings!
