Savannah, GA (Sept. 28, 2011) - Life at The Landings on Skidaway Island is about community – not just The Landings community, but about supporting the greater Savannah community and any number of worthy causes. The St. Joseph’s/Chandler Leukemia Cup Regatta is just one of the ways Landings residents get involved to support a cause.

The Regatta represents The Landings sailing club’s one big “off-campus” event of the year. It’s Rhodes 19 boats are taken upriver to the Savannah Yacht Club, to participate in a carefully managed set of races and to fellowship with others in the sailing community. And of course the Landings Rhodes 19 Team contributes to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a very worthwhile cause.

At this year’s Regatta the sailing conditions were extremely challenging with a very strong tidal current and light breezes. Maneuvering around the windward mark was a challenge but there was a tie for first place between the Landings “Hornet” and “Harvest Moon”. Since results are handicapped based on the number of dollars each boat contributed, the Rhodes 19 crew of Hornet took the honors.

The Savannah Yacht Club hosted golf, tennis and fishing tournaments, a black-tie dinner and auction and several other events to raise money. The Regatta raised $65,000 ($4,000 of which came from The Landings Rhodes 19 Sailing Club) and the grand total of all events was $326,000. Of the 50 or so other yacht clubs nationwide that also host Leukemia Cup events, only the San Francisco Yacht Club raises more money. Congratulations to the Savannah Yacht Club for their consistently excellent performance!
