The land planning principles embodied in neo-traditional community design, Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) and New Urbanism reflect a deliberate effort to capture the essence of pre-World War II towns and villages where human interaction, rather than accommodating automobile traffic, is central to everyday living. Unlike neotraditional developments, New Urbanist communities typically are not gated, and they integrate workplaces, retail areas and a wider range of housing types.
